I don't quite understand how this works.
If I type, for example:

$ youtube-dl --get-filename -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" X7yOaSWWVJs

I get:

Japan A Story of Love and Hate.flv

but nothing is downloaded. What do I need to do to actually download the video?

Remove the --get-filename option: youtube-dl -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" X7yOaSWWVJs, all the --get-{something} options will only print the requested info and the video won't be downloaded. The --output/-o option will work without the --get-filename option, it's independent.
