This is unfortunate, and I don’t like suggesting workarounds for dumb crap like this, but legacy applications and the popular subtitle editor Aegisub fail to detect the correct character encoding for ASS subtitles when they do not contain a UTF-8 BOM. This affects at least the Crunchyroll extractor, but possibly others as well. The de facto standard is to save ASS with BOM.
