I've been trying to download videos from a specific YouTube user, filtered by a simple search (the string used is in the description, not in the title), it works quite perfect in the YouTube website (not too many videos, by the way), but with youtube-dl I get all the videos of that user. I still don't get the search syntax of youtube-dl, and I don't see an specific documentation about it.

This is the simple syntax I'm using (I've used ytsearch and ytsearchall with the same results):
youtube-dl https://www.youtube.com/user/lyndapodcast "ytsearch:'David Booth'"

Am I using the wrong syntax? how is the right one?
Is this a youtube-dl issue? When will be fixed?

Please follow the guide below

  • You will be asked some questions and requested to provide some information, please read them carefully and answer honestly
  • Put an x into all the boxes [ ] relevant to your issue (like this: [x])

Make sure you are using the latest version: run youtube-dl --version and ensure your version is 2018.02.11. If it's not, read this FAQ entry and update. Issues with outdated version will be rejected.

  • I've verified and I assure that I'm running youtube-dl 2018.02.11

Before submitting an issue make sure you have:

Your syntax is incorrect. With this syntax you download all videos from user followed by downloading all videos that match ytsearch query.

In that case, what's the right syntax? swapping the parameters youtube-dl ignore the YoutTube user URL, do a global search, and download just one video (about a hockey player, by the way)
youtube-dl "ytsearch:'David Booth'" https://www.youtube.com/user/lyndapodcast

Again: it's technically impossible to do non global search. You either use ytsearch or pass youtube's search URL.

Add the found videos, or just the videos you are interested in from your search on YT to a new playlist you just made, and then use youtube-dl with that playlist URL.
