There is already an issue open, but with no actual solution, just bad work-arounds, and discussion closed to outsiders.
I'm not familiar with youtube-dl internal code, but I know how to log in programmatically into tumblr using other tools.
To login into tumblr:
Cookies then returned by the site are enough to get actual urls instead of the redirection content (works just fine in perl with WWW::Mechanize...)
I would tend to assume that youtube-dl has the required framework to do most of that, and that it would take half an hour for someone familiar with youtube-dl internals to write it. I'd be happy to test the result ;)
Baring that, just create a tumblr account, set the content to "restricted", post any video, then you can check whether it's available...
