I got similar error (see below). I used my distro (Linux Mint 18.3) repository to ensure latest version and when I tried to use youtube-dl updater was referred back to the repository thus stopping me from doing any further update! chris@chris-K43U ~/Desktop $ sudo youtube-dl -U |

Removed and downloaded latest version using curl. Then it worked. Repository needs update. |
