  • I've verified and I assure that I'm running youtube-dl 2018.06.25

  • At least skimmed through the README, most notably the FAQ and BUGS sections

  • Searched the bugtracker for similar issues including closed ones

  • Checked that provided video/audio/playlist URLs (if any) are alive and playable in a browser

What is the purpose of your issue?

  • Bug report (encountered problems with youtube-dl)
  • Site support request (request for adding support for a new site)
  • Feature request (request for a new functionality)
  • Question
  • Other

Hi!

I'm trying to download some parts of the MTV movie awards 2018 (http://www.mtv.com/full-episodes/1nwdbg/movie-tv-awards-2018-2018-mtv-movie-awards-full-show) and I just want to know if there's an easy way to download those parts. I've searched github for solution and I learned one way to do it is to use ffmpeg, but I'm wondering if there's a way to download those parts without ffmpeg because if you load the MTV awards video, it's already partitioned. I'm pretty new to youtube-dl so I download clips the basic way.

I only need 2 super short clips... time:
1.) 00-58-00 to 00:58:20
2.) 01:19:00 to 01:20:00.

(If someone can download it for me I'll be very grateful! 🙏🏻

Thanks!!

Hello @aelintfg

Your post isn't an issue per se, rather it's a support request... The active yt-dl developers' team is understaffed and providing usage support is, understandably IMHO, low in their agenda... Since no other yt-dl user has even attempted to clue you in, some assistance coming from my humble self...

Your "issue" presents one major difficulty; the full show at

http://www.mtv.com/full-episodes/1nwdbg/movie-tv-awards-2018-2018-mtv-movie-awards-full-show

requires login credentials (Find your TV provider and then sign in with your username and password); you haven't provided any, as per issue template:

If work on your issue requires account credentials, please provide them or explain how one can obtain them.

Also, it's highly probable that the full-show, due to rights reasons, is geo-fenced in the US only; so access to that video by someone wishing to help you is very restricted... 😞

I'm not sure whether yt-dl supports user authentication for www.mtv.com host; additionally, when I now type:
youtube-dl -F "http://www.mtv.com/full-episodes/1nwdbg/movie-tv-awards-2018-2018-mtv-movie-awards-full-show" I get:

[mtv] movie-tv-awards-2018-2018-mtv-movie-awards-full-show: Downloading webpage
[mtv] 6a7ac928-6a30-4e82-8478-66242480bfa0: Downloading info
ERROR: Unable to download XML: HTTP Error 500: Internal Server Error (caused by
HTTPError()); please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Make sure you
are using the latest version; type youtube-dl -U to update. Be sure to call yo
utube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output.

which is bad in itself...

I'm wondering if there's a way to download those parts without ffmpeg

I don't think so, no; yt-dl's native-hls downloader, AFAIK, doesn't support downloading only a specific section of a full video (perhaps this is grounds for implementing such a feature, but ffmpeg, a required utility as things stand currently, is already capable, as you said, of such a task).

For future reference, I'll use the following MTV URI:
http://www.mtv.com/video-clips/rvrerq/movie-tv-awards-2018-mtv-movie-and-tv-awards-in-90-seconds
which is free and accessible globally! Its total duration is 00:01:43; if I wanted to grab a 30s excerpt from, say, 00:00:30 to 00:01:00, a cmd that could be used is:

youtube-dl "http://www.mtv.com/video-clips/rvrerq" --hls-prefer-ffmpeg --external-downloader-args "-ss 00:00:30 -to 00:01:00" -o "cut.mp4"

Be warned that because of HLS streaming, ffmpeg will only be able to start dumping from the HLS segment whose start timestamp is closer to the specified -ss value; so the downloaded part may not be the perfect edit you wished for...

I hope I've helped somehow... 😺
