So before you suggest any fix, here's what I did

• I've verified and I assure that I'm running youtube-dl 2018.07.04
• At least skimmed through the README, most notably the FAQ and BUGS sections
• Searched the bugtracker for similar issues including closed ones
• Checked that provided video/audio/playlist URLs (if any) are alive and playable in a browser
• reinstalled openssl
• checked that python is up to date
• reinstalled youtube-dl using pip, brew and curl (one at the time)
• --no-check-certificate option works but not secure apparently
• i'm on macOS High Sierra (10.13.5)
