% youtube-dl -U
Hi! We changed distribution method and now youtube-dl needs to update itself one more time.
This will only happen once. Simply press enter to go on. Sorry for the trouble!
From now on, get the binaries from http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html, not from the git repository.

Done! Now you can run youtube-dl.

% md5sum youtube-dl

Thank you very much for the report. There was an error during the release process and I had to resume it manually. Looks like something went wrong there, and I uploaded the legacy update binary by accident.

I've removed the offending files and released 2013.01.06.1, which fixes the problem. Run the binary once more and you should get a real youtube-dl, once GitHub updates our update URL (you'll get ERROR: unable to download latest version with no chance of overwriting the file by accident).

This should be done in the next few minutes. If you can't wait, you can also just re-download the youtube-dl file.

Just re-checked: GitHub has updated our files. Simply updating once more again should work now. Sorry for the inconvenience!

@1anre Simply typing sudo youtube-dl -U should do the trick to update out of this. If all else fails, simply reinstall youtube-dl and you should be set to use it again.
