Any example url?. Probably the problem is that youtube don't let download the 1080p video independently, you have to download the audio and video separetely and merge them later (see #1612)

Ok, here ia an example url https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CvcF-NzvI4 .
So, what exactly do I have to do download 1080p video with youtube-dl from youtube?

You'll need ffmpeg (or avconv).
On recent versions of youtube-dl we have added a new feature (still experimental and needs some improvements) that allows you to do this automatically.

  • List the available formats
$ youtube-dl 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CvcF-NzvI4' -F
[info] Available formats for 7CvcF-NzvI4:
format code extension resolution  note
139         m4a       audio only  DASH audio , audio@ 48k (worst)
140 m4a audio only DASH audio , audio@128k <-- This is the audio we choose
160         mp4       192p        DASH video
133         mp4       240p        DASH video
134         mp4       360p        DASH video
135         mp4       480p        DASH video
136         mp4       720p        DASH video
137         mp4       1080p       DASH video <--- This the 1080p video onyl
17          3gp       176x144
36          3gp       320x240
5           flv       400x240
43          webm      640x360
18          mp4       640x360
22          mp4       1280x720    (best)
  • We request to download both formats:
$ youtube-dl 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CvcF-NzvI4' -f 137+140
.... blah
[ffmpeg] Merging formats into "Python3 Tutorial 16 Number Guessing with If Then Else Statements Linux-7CvcF-NzvI4.mp4"

Then "Python3 Tutorial 16 Number Guessing with If Then Else Statements Linux-7CvcF-NzvI4.mp4" is what you expect, the 1080p version.

When using "-f bestvideo+bestaudio" can you clean up afterwards or make something like --cleanup?

Manually deleting the halves is annoying.

@weedy It's not done yet, see #2108.

just simply use
youtube-dl -f 'bestvideo[ext=mp4]+bestaudio[ext=m4a]/bestvideo+bestaudio' --merge-output-format mp4 [LINK]

Hi guys, this is super late but I've got youtube-dl and ffmpeg for the first time today, and I'm also seeing this, where I can only download merged up to 720p, and separately (and merge later with ffmpeg) at 1080p. This is fine, and ffmpeg automatically merges them if I do it as -f 137+140, but every time I try, the video is frozen after 5 seconds and the audio continues. I tried downloading them separately and I'll just layer them myself in iMovie or something (-f 140 [link], and then afterward -f 137 [link]), but sure enough, the audio file is fine but the video is 5 seconds long. What am I doing wrong? I've done this at least 20 times today but cannot get the video longer than 5 seconds long. It is a video that is over 12 minutes long that I am trying to get here. Someone help?
