Hi there,

I've been using youtube-dl for quite some time but whenever I casually google it and I take a look at the project page (gh-pages), I always get a little disappointed 😀 I mean, the app itself is brilliant and I can't go without it, so why not have a more beautiful project page as well?
I'd like to know your opinion about it.

Thanks,
Amin

Also requested in #1025, contributions are welcomed, do you have a specific idea of what to change?

To be honest, there's really nothing I like about the current design. So, I guess we should start from scratch, because otherwise I don't think there's really much we can improve based on the current design (but hey, that's just my opinion 😃).

As per specific suggestions, I think we can use Read the Docs for docs. And for the rest of the pages, we can go with Jekyll and use a pre-built theme or [easily] make one if none of them fit.

Any opinions?

Thank you for your support. I do think we could improve our homepage, but that's probably not a matter of which frameworks to use, but a simple redesign. I'm quite pleased with the current static HTML only format, to the point where I'd like to switch the download-server to it as well.

On the frontpage, I'd like:

  • A short description of youtube-dl, including a hint that we support many extractors (and a link to it), and which Python versions we do support
  • Download instructions
  • Very prominent support / develop / irc links / texts
  • Either the documentation (one page) on the front page or a prominent link to it

Come to think of it, I'm actually quite pleased with the current information design, except that some information is rather hard to reach. The buttons may look a little bit dated, but the gist of it is basically already there..

Maybe we could use bootstrap and some theme?

We don't need a fancy theme, just a simple small redesign. In particular, our current website already works great on mobile devices.
