So I paid for a rental video, but I need to use youtube-dl to download it because my connection is too slow to just watch it on Youtube. Whenever I try to download the video, it gives me an error that "rental" videos are not supported. How can I download this?

Since rental videos use DRM, they can not be played with a standard video player. You can read more about this topic here: http://www.defectivebydesign.org/youtube-rentals

Is there any way to download the DRM-protected youtube videos and crack them like you can with DRM-protected Amazon Kindle eBooks?

I probably should've looked this up before renting a video on a poor connection

In theory, there could be, but it's not probable. Major studios enforce strong encryption for their content. I think we should close this issue.

I'm genuinely curious about how this DRM is accomplished when YouTube claims to have moved to HTML5. Do the rental videos still use Flash? Or do they use (not yet and hopefully never standard) EME?
