Other tools like get_flash_videos can extract videos from sites that they don't know.

Would it be possible to add an option that yt-dl forces (all?) extractors if it doesn't know an url? Would that be a good idea?

youtube-dl already has this functionality - we call it the generic extractor. It works with a number of websites, and does recognize a plethora of embedded videos.
