How to build from source?

I have read through your readme file, you only say

If you want to create a build of youtube-dl yourself, you'll need

python
make (only GNU make is supported)
pandoc
zip
nosetests

I still don't know how to build.
If I want to add feature, or some small customized, I need to build, right?
