I debugged it a little bit and found the following issues with the URL:
http://www.motorsport.com/f1/video/main-gallery/red-bull-racing-2014-rules-explained/

There is no extractor available for "motorsport.com" like it is available for many of the other websites. See for eg: extractor/funnyordie.py. Hence it falls back to the generic extractor which cannot parse this URL correctly and throws the error. Furthermore "motorsport.com" uses "swf" files for video. So, even if one writes a motorsport.py to handle the URL, it will still not work as downloading "swf" file is not supported.

Until support for "motorsport.com" and "swf" format is provided it is best to report the error as mentioned in the issue like """ERROR: Unsupported URL: http://www.motorsport.com/f1/video/main-gallery/red-bull-racing-2014-rules-explained/; please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Be sure to call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output. Make sure you are using the latest version; type youtube-dl -U to update.""" and then not throw the exception and exit gracefully.

What this means for you is that you wont be able to download videos from motorsport.com until support is enabled.

@zhaphod Thank you for your comment, but that much is right in the error message (that's what Unsupported URL means), plus the output already contains

WARNING: Falling back on generic information extractor.

youtube-dl version 2014.04.04 adds support for motorsport.com.

@jillh510 It looks like you used pip to install youtube-dl. pip install -U youtube-dl should suffice to update to the newest version
