Please call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output. The output should start with [debug] System config.

Also make sure that you are using the latest version (2014.06.26). It looks like you Ubuntu's package manager to install youtube-dl. If that's the case, try updating. If you want, you can uninstall the Ubuntu package and use our manual installation method, with:

sudo apt-get remove -y youtube-dl
sudo curl https://yt-dl.org/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
hash -r

That fixed it for me. Distro is Mint 17 based on Ubuntu 13.something.

I had the same problem with the version in Ubuntu 14.04 (LTS.)
I used your instructions and the problem has gone.
