I cannot download high quality videos

I have used youtube-dl command line on Win7 to download high quality videos. My usage:

youtube-dl.exe --max-quality mp4 -o D:\Download\video.mp4 [URL]

is there something missed?

By the way is there a version change log for youtube-dl and shows what changes in every version?

Can you mention a complete command line (including the URL) and tell us why the downloaded video does not suffice high quality?

--max-quality may be at fault here. It limits the quality you're getting. For best results, just run youtube-dl. If you have ffmpeg installed (and thus can merge streams), you can also try youtube-dl -f bestvideo+bestaudio/mp4/best.

I am closing this issue now since the misuse of --max-quality (maybe we should remove that option). We'll reopen it when you provide further information as requested above.

I have tried some Vevo videos which has 720p or 1080p, but the program doesn't download high quality, only downloads lower ones..

Please post the output you get with -v. We cannot help you if you do not give us that output. I can only tell that it works fine for me.
