Fix for #3713 (1bf5423) covers this as well. Thanks for the report.

thought that I'd got that version when I updated from 2014.09.06 to 2014.09.10 - doh! thanks :)

Sorry, it's not yet released. 2014.09.10 was released before this fix.
However you can grab the sources and run youtube-dl this way:
python -m youtube_dl http://arstechnica.com/science/2014/09/a-big-chunk-of-the-sierra-nevada-caught-fracturing-on-video/

Fixed in youtube-dl 2014.09.10.1 - simply update once again ;)
