What is the best way to to keep local copies of content but easily be able to update (similar to git pull) as well as not downloading files you don't like (specific content from a user you like)?

Please provide a better explanation. Your question isn't being answered because i suspect people do not know what you are talking about. You have not even mentioned what site you are talking about.

youtube-dl is a tool to download, convert and play video and sound files/streams. While there is some local content management, what you are asking is - if I understand it correctly, since it's still quite vague - out of scope for youtube-dl.

Note that you can use the --download-archive as well as the various --skip-* options to record which videos you have downloaded. For more information, peruse the option list.

Thanks for the help. Where can I find documentation for the archive file? Also, is there any way I can help with the --donload-archive feature? My man page shows it as experimental.

The archive file format is - as of now - proprietary for youtube-dl (for example, we may want to change it later). Your manpage seems outdated, please consult the online documentation for more information on --download-archive.
