How to fix the warning about "avconv is outdated"?

I tried the following but failed:
$ sudo apt-get install libav-tools

libav-tools is already the newest version.

What output do you get when run avconv-version? Also, which distribution is this? Can you post the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list?

I got the error as well because my avconv was just a symlink to ffmpeg, hence it was serving the ffmpeg version when asked, making youtube-dl think it was outdated. If you have the same issue, or if you have both installed, you can also try using the --prefer-ffmpeg option (--prefer-avconv being the default).

Please bear in mind that this is just a warning, not an error. We have had multiple reports of older ffmpeg versions leading to problems - it may still work fine though.

@falimero Your problem does not seem to be the warning. Please open a new issue. Please include the full output you get when running youtube-dl, what you expected, and what you observed. For more tips on effective bug reporting, you may also want to reread our bug reporting guidelines.

I also get the warning on Ubuntu Trusty, even using mc3mans repo in active. Using --prefer-avconv each time is gonna make me bored & tired. Could we add this option in a file like .youtube-dlrc?

Why is youtube-dl downloading 2 files for this video.. and it seems that the final mp4 file is just audio.

When I run locally on my MacOS, this doesn't happen. When it's running on the server (iron.io) I see this problem.
