I disable networking and run
simon@falcon:$ youtube-dl --version
2014.12.17.2
simon@falcon:$ youtube-dl -U
ERROR: can't find the current version. Please try again later.
simon@falcon:~$ echo $?
0
Why not set an non-zero exit status and print the message to STDERR?
