It seems dailymotion scheme has changed something, using version 2012.09.27, I cannot extract any video anymore :

$ youtube-dl -cit http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv1a4w
WARNING: Falling back on generic information extractor.
[generic] xv1a4w: Downloading webpage
[generic] xv1a4w: Extracting information

Works for me, please make sure to make youtube-dl from the repo or from the tarball as there are changes that are still not rolled up in a release. Reopen if you still have issues.

WARNING: Falling back on generic information extractor.
This means youtube-dl wasn't able to recognize the URL you provided as a Dailymotion URL, and thus tried with the generic extractor, and of course failed.

You should probably try quoting your URL, like this, just in case:
youtube-dl -cit "http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xv1a4w"

As @FiloSottile said, though, you're using an out-of-date version, so you might want to try with the latest version as well.

I use homebrew on osx in order to get my unix tools working, so I'll wait for the youtube-dl to be updated.
Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, who does maintain youtube-dl on homebrew?

There are several contributors, but it seems Anks deals with youtube-dl, now
