Maybe something lighter than pandoc could be used to convert the README?

E.g.: md2man.

md2man isn't packaged for debian. ronn seems to be a viable, but lacks export to reST/txt.

pandoc is only required for releasing, and neither for users nor developers, so I don't see an immediate need. Feel free to suggest patches though - I'll apply anything as long as the requirements are available on Arch, debian, and if possible Mac OS X.
