Which version of youtube-dl are you using? Type youtube-dl --version to find out. On my system, this works fine:

$ youtube-dl -v GBPPdwqVujE
[debug] youtube-dl version 2013.01.13
[debug] Git HEAD: 4da769c
[debug] Python version 2.7.3 - Linux-3.6-trunk-amd64-x86_64-with-debian-7.0
[debug] Proxy map: {}
[youtube] Setting language
[youtube] GBPPdwqVujE: Downloading video webpage
[youtube] GBPPdwqVujE: Downloading video info webpage
[youtube] GBPPdwqVujE: Extracting video information
[download] Destination: GBPPdwqVujE.mp4
[download] 100.0% of 134.08M at    1.85M/s ETA 00:00

As documented in the FAQ, this error message is indicative of an old old youtube-dl version. Type

sudo youtube-dl --update

to update youtube-dl.

@shaggytwodope This won't have any effect unless you have a file like http://www.youtube.com/watchXv=GBPPdwqVujE sitting in your cwd, which is highly unlikely. Equals signs do not need to be escaped.

shaggy@Riddlebox [10:54:17] [~]
-> % tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBPPdwqVujE
zsh: no matches found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBPPdwqVujE

now you see why i use escape in the url. not every setup is yours mate lol.

@shaggytwodope You're right, in zsh, you indeed need the quoting, but that's because of their lenient interpretation of POSIX.2. In any case, that still wouldn't yield the error the original poster gets.
