You are using an quite old version (2014.02.17). Please update your copy following update instructions. Note that the official ubuntu packages are usually out-dated.

I had installed the version from Oct 15 2015, just installed today.
I get this:

ls -l /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1007704 Oct 15 18:41 /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl*

But I now realize I had another (old) version in /usr/bin that was being executed. I guess the old installer was putting it in /usr/bin and the new installer in /usr/local/bin. This is something the new installer could remove.

I got the software working now. thank you
