slow downloads with small video files

Hi all. It seems that youtube-dl has become super slow when downloading small sized videos. These files seem to be split into about 50 or even more 76k sized parts during download and it takes forever until say a 4mb file is finally downloaded. What's going on? Can this be fixed? Amazingly enough bigger files seem to be downloaded fast as usual. 600mb of more or less small sized videos took an hour and 30 minutes yesterday, and I have about 36kbps download speed ...

youtube-dl does not limit the downloading speed by default. These videos are served in segments and not as a single file thus imposing additional network I/O overhead.
