I have recompiled both libav (to /usr/local), & ffmpeg (to /root). I noticed in both cases that
config.mak had EXCLUDED the config=https lines. I enabled these & did make / make install.
It made no difference, I still get the ERROR.
What am I missing? Link to SSL, hence exclusions? Or something more sinister (I have about
as much trust in Google, as belief that Hitler was an OK guy)???
This ERROR suddenly popped up. I had been downloading all morning (no ERRORS), had not done any upgrades, & URLz I downloaded quite happily in the morning don't work either.

The test URLz that you supplied worked fine.
I wrote a short script to make things simple, that's where the y v ... are from in my code :

#!/bin/sh

youtube-dl simple coding

Usage: $ y [args], ie u, or h, or a , or z , or v

script_args=""
debugging=0

if [ "$OSTYPE" = "beos" ]; then
mimeset -F "$MOZILLA_BIN"
fi

pass_arg_count=0
while [ $# -gt $pass_arg_count ]
do
case "$1" in
u | --update)
script_args="$script_args -U"
debugging=1
shift
;;
h | --help)
script_args="$script_args --help"
shift
;;
a | --audio-best)
script_args="$script_args -x $2"
shift 2
;;
z | --audio-wav)
script_args="$script_args -x --audio-format wav --audio-quality 0 $2"
shift 2
;;
v | --video-keep)
script_args="$script_args -k $2"
shift 2
;;

# Move the unrecognized argument to the end of the list.
arg="$1"
shift
set -- "$@" "$arg"
pass_arg_count=expr $pass_arg_count + 1

echo $script_args
exec "youtube-dl" $script_args
