This can be a good feature; because the configuration can be more readable and it can be exportable.

Hmm... Something like changing settings.py by settings.json? If the problem is being more userfriendly, Python's dictionaries have the same synthax than JSON files.

Use Dictionaries could be a good idea.

Easier to use with Python. Better than JSON files. Jekyll uses YAML, which is Ruby non-native but has a pretty good perfomance on it. Also is fully userfriendly and readable.

May be use Yaml can be better. For posts metadata i use Markdown-yaml so can be a good option.
