Use Twitter/Bootstrap

I would very much like to make use of Twitter Bootstrap from https://github.com/twitter/bootstrap including the jQuery plugins available on the site at http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/javascript.html

Carsten and I had a short discussion about this. One concern about using this is that all websites start to look the same.

I like the style, the code and the idea behind Twitter bootstrap. But we must be careful because this framework has become very popular and is often used: All pages look somewhat alike. Nevertheless, I can look at this. I'm not (yet) convinced.

But the biggest problem is that I have to break backwards compatibility. Either I'm compatible with Zikula 1.3 or to Twitter bootstrap. The users are already mad at us and complain everywhere.

We must be careful with the license, because the icons from Glyphicons Free are licensed under CC BY 3.0.

I am not sure, but as far as I know is jQuery UI Bootstrap a little but outdated.

Looks like CC BY-ND 3.0 and not CC BY 3.0. (twbs/bootstrap#1491)

@hvorragend are the icons used in the css files or are they just part of the docs directory they distribute?

The icons are used in the css files.

What do you think about this:

• We just delete the two images that are used in the stylesheet.
• And depending on how we use bootstrap, we can simply omit the sprites.css.

If we use the LESS version, so that the less files are compiled by the javascript in real-time, then it is possible to omit the sprites.css file.

@hvorragend - regarding what you were saying on IM the other day about licensing requirements and possibly using the less version, I think if we do that, we should simply compile our version to CSS and use that rather than using client-side JS runtime compiler - is that an option, or does that defeat the point?

To bring in a little structure in the whole new features, I would suggest that we split the issues.

• Twitter bootstrap runs without less.js (=> Milestone 1.3.3)
• Instead of less.js we add lessphp (=> Milestone 1.4.0)

The jQuery stuff is another topic in other tickets.

@hvorragend regarding your licensing question, CC-By-3 is OK so long as the terms of the license do not require a backlink on the website itself. Either mention in the source, and/or in the distribution about/notice, but not requiring links on the actual website.
