I would like to have a displayName field in the usertable. We could use it for the user search, intercom, Dizkus and similar tasks. Imho that is much nicer, then just show the $userName.
Of course there is a realName field in the profiles, but for the search functions like in intercom I think a implementation in the usertable would be better.
I agree that this issue needs to be addressed, but I don't believe this is the proper solution. I do agree that usernames should be allowed to have capital letters, etc. The solution (IMO) is to store the username as the user originally selected (e.g. 'mYCooluSerName') but make all comparisons in the controllers, etc. case insensitive. therefore, 'mYCooluSerName' =='mycoolusername'=='MYCOOLUSERNAME'.

I guess (despite what I think I've read) I don't understand why this hasn't been proposed and excepted as the easiest answer. maybe I've completely misunderstood something.
@rgasch I hope you are still around. you are needed to address this issue.
oops - I mean @rmburkhead
The displayName is not a solution for lower case user name problem. I am thinking about this issue for a long time. I mention it now because it was mention it the lower case discussion, too.
For me the displayName feature would be interesting, because I have several pages, on which the user know each other by their real names. But on the most of the modules their user name will shown.
the profile module already has this functionality.
I know that, but to use it for search functions like in Intercom or Users a entry in the usertable would be nicer. Otherwise you have to do a lot joins. In addition there should be an option in the settings where you can select what should be displayed (displayName/username).
