Hi guys,

I noticed that many different video file types are not recognized after they have been uploaded.

All the other options, like embedded and links to external sites are working fine.

(http://media.railscasts.com/assets/episodes/videos/352-securing-an-api.m4v is a good example … try to upload it to zotonic.)

Indeed, the .m4v extension is not mentioned in the z_media_identify.erl file.
Currently we use a combination of ImageMagick, file and a list of extension to guess the mime type of a file.

According to our list the preferred extension for video/mp4 is .mp4

Two questions:

  1. Do you have any other extensions not being recognized?
  2. Are you using 0.8 or 0.9dev?

Hi Marc,

I am using 0.9dev ... we need the bootstrap interface and I really don't want to bolt bootstrap onto 0.8 and then get busy again when 0.9 is official.

There were a lot of different movie types that were not recognized. There are .mov files, .avi and some more probably.
Is there a way that I could capture some binary information from the file(s) itself to help out in recognizing the correct file
type? I'd be happy to help if that's desired.

I also have an almost complete (or very big) mime type function in Erlang that I could share if that's helpful...

Then we are using the same code at the moment :)

That would help!

I also know of some mime type project, using a file with definitions.
https://github.com/spawngrid/mimetypes

Maybe we can use that one?
Can you have a check if your files are mentioned in this library?

Marc,

Thank you! I'll be checking it out. If all fails I'll give you access to the files in question.

Added an issue with spawgrid/mimetypes, as it is unclear what license they use.
