Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Windows seems to hate extensions, and wants me to suppress the extensions of all my files in all my directories in File Explorer, or in Directory Opus, which I use as replacement. I override this completely, and in particular, I make sure that the .lnk extension is shown for LNK files.

PROBLEM: Now on the left panel of Open-Shell (Windows 7 style), all my software shows their .lnk extensions. This looks ugly, so I have tried to remove the extensions.

ATTEMPTED SOLUTION: Right-click —> Properties —> General tab —> Delete the .lnk extension in the top line.

NEW PROBLEM: The button still works, but the icon is now a blank icon. The list of blank icons looks more ugly than the list with .lnk extensions, and it's harder to find the program that I am looking for. This is worse than before.

Interestingly, the 'Properties' window now only has four tabs instead of the original six, and there is no button to change the icon.

Describe the solution you'd like

QUESTION: Is there a way to hide the .lnk extension without losing the icon?

REQUEST: I'm guessing that this is not possible, so could Open-Shell please give us a way:

  • to display the .lnk extensions within the directories of File Explorer and DOpus, and
  • to hide the .lnk extensions in the left-hand panel of Open-Shell, and
  • to display the icons in the left-hand panel of Open-Shell.
