2014.7.0 looks to be available in the SaltStack PPA for Precise now -

Nope - I'm unsure how to best go about testing the new version. Should I just 
add that PPA and install the salt? If so I'll give it a try.

Yes, that should work.  Of course, I'd recommend testing in a sacrificial VM  :)
