Making Optifine resourcepacks that add lighting/water/custom skies work without Optifine (mainly focused on Sodium users)

This is a relatively simple guide designed to help users who want "shaders" with Sodium but don't want to use Iris or Fabulous (vanilla) shaders. If you didn't know already, Sodium does NOT work with Optifine shaders. This can be overcome using Iris but it requires a decent amount of technical knowledge, and Fabulous (vanilla) shaders can be very heavy on system resources. Screenshots are further down.

NOTE: Both MCPP and Colormatic are under the LGPL License and FabricSkyBoxes is under the MIT License. All three binaries which I have provided are unmodified from the original source code. The resourcepack I have included is NOT mine, and is StitchyYT's. I have permission to redistribute and edit his pack

This repository is under the LGPL license. Before asking for support, please be aware of its terms.

IF I HAVE INARDEVENTLY VIOLATED YOUR LICENSE TERMS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY MAKING AN ISSUE BEFORE TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

This guide assumes you know how to install mods on the Fabric modloader, how to install mods from a .zip, use Curseforge modpacks, copy and paste mods/resourcepacks from instance to instance and how to load resourcepacks.

If you would like me to change something or you find an error, just make an issue and if you want to do something big, make a pull request please.

Also, this guide assumes you have Sodium installed already. Additionally, if you want that sweet, sweet, connected glass, I'd highly recommend this gist by DragonEggBedrockBreaking.

Finally, I wanna mention that there's a program called MCPPPP that's basically MCPP but it's written in C++, and it is slightly more difficult to use. I'd recommend using it if and only if you know how to find the path to a folder, and don't mind the lack of a graphical interface. I'll be adding a guide on the more complicated part at a later date.

Screenshots of what this actually looks like: huge_2021-04-18_17 37 48 huge_2021-04-18_17 43 11 huge_2021-04-18_17 43 30 2021-04-18_17 33 51 huge_2021-04-18_17 33 55 huge_2021-04-18_17 37 20

Those screenshots are with the resourcepack I included. Here are some screenshots with the resourcepack I included and a second one: huge_2021-04-18_17 48 28

Fun note: The mountains are blue, I have no clue why. If I had to guess, it's due to MCPP having some bugs with conversion but I still think it looks quite good. huge_2021-04-18_17 54 10

BIG CHANGES ARE COMING: Soon, I will be removing my release from Github and I will refer you to Curseforge. This is because I feel it's unethical to provide direct .jars and I want to help boost the mod authors' downloads on CF. The steps will apply like normal, but you will download the .zip from CF, and import from .zip in GDL or MultiMC or whatever launcher you use. Then just copy and paste the mods into any of the installations of Minecraft that you have and do the same for the resourcepacks.

Do NOT go to the discord servers for MCPP, MCPPPP, Colormatic, Sodium, Canvas, or FabricSkyBoxes!! Make an issue report here first. If we can narrow it down to a specific mod, I will take care of reporting bugs. Don't ask for support in those servers. I will eventually make a discord server for this project and probably other mods if I ever do that, you can also talk to me there.

Some gloabl info: Ignore any resourcepack messages saying it was made for an older version of Minecraft. The pack's version is 1.16.1, and I cannot do anything about it. If you use Dramatic Skys, put it as the top pack, then the one I bundled if you want it, then your other resourcepacks. Otherwise it will not work right.

Steps for Curseforge Release:

Note: If you have no idea how to do this, follow the steps below. Or, just extract the release into your .minecraft folder, that should also work and skip to step 6.

  1. This is a Curseforge guide for now.
  2. Download MCPP from my github.
  3. Download the .zip from Curseforge or use your launcher's built in modpack browsing if it has that.
  4. Install the modpack using the Import from .zip option.
  5. Copy and paste the mods/resourcepacks into your other MC installations if you want.
  6. Launch the game and profit.
  7. This next bit is OPTIONAL. I highly recommend turning on Clear Skies and enabling block flickering if you want it to look better.
  8. Hit ESC on your keyboard and go to Mods. Search for Colormatic. In the top right, there'll be a small icon that looks like this image
  9. Now click on it and go to the 'Fog & Sky' button.
  10. Click Clear Skies if you want to remove the horizontal banding at the sky's horizon.
  11. If you don't want block flickering (light from torches/lanterns/etc. will flicker), go to 'Lighting' and disable it.
  12. You can experiment more, and once you're done changing it to your hearts' content, click Save & Quit and go back to the game.

And you're done! Go get yourself a choccy milk and congratulate yourself.

Steps for Github Release

Note: If you have no idea how to do this, follow the steps below. Or, just extract the release into your .minecraft folder, that should also work and skip to step 10.

  1. Download the latest release from the releases page.
  2. Extract the .zip into a separate folder. Do NOT extract the resourcepack after extracting the release, it is a .zip by default and will not work if you extract it.
  3. Go to your minecraft/mods/ folder and paste the mods from the extracted .zip into that folder.
  4. Now is a good time to install ModMenu if you haven't already. You'll need it to configure one of the mods.
  5. That's it! You're done with the hard part

Well...if you're reading this you want the technical version, right? To do this, you need to be reasonably tech savvy; but you need these skills: if you know how to find the path to a folder, and don't mind the lack of a graphical interface to use the program.

  1. Close your MC if it's running. You don't need to unload or reload the resourcepacks.
  2. Grab MCPPPP from here and follow the instructions on it. NOTE: Leave MCPP in the mods folder. Due to some issues with MCPPPP, certain conversions are a little funky and MCPP will still do the bits that MCPPPP can't do. If you do not notice a difference right now, that's okay. You will see a difference once MCPPPP is more fleshed out.
  3. Once you've finished converting the resourcepack(s), load up your game
  4. Load the resourcepack if you unloaded it.
  5. Now you can go to step 12 of the easy guide and do that to configure your game more

That's it! You're done!

Please let me know if there are any issues. I will try to get them fixed; and let me know of other resourcepacks that might work with this, or test them and report back to me with Github issues! I'd love to know that this works with more packs.

Make sure to add the proper labels to your issue, it makes it easier for me to distinguish things apart.

Making Optifine resourcepacks that add CET/CIT/CEM

CET is Custom Entity Textures. CEM is Custom Entity Models. CIT is Custom Item Textures. An example of CET and CEM is the famous Better Dogs resourcepack. An example of CIT is a resourcepack that adds textures depending on the enchantments of a sword.

This section is currently under construction. VMT is essentially CET. MCPPPP works with VMT for now (it can convert it). Unfortunately, the dev of VMT is taking a break, and hence MCPPPP cannot work on VMT conversion if it's not being updated. Remember that VMT is an alternative format to Optifine's CET, like how FSB is an alternative skybox format to Optifine's.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS (as of 6/18/21) There are now TWO CEM mods. Both are WIP, once they get releases I'll talk about them.

  1. https://github.com/dorianpb/cem
  2. https://github.com/SekoiaTree/Centime

There is also a converter for Chime which adds Custom Item Textures (CIT), made by the developer of Chime https://github.com/emilyalexandra/chime-converter This section will be updated in the future.
