I wanted to finish my half-implementation in #41, I think with this final change #39 should now be addressed.
This is not the most elegant solution, but as stated mimics what pymatbridge does. It seems to work, and should be adequate at least as a first pass.
The MATLAB code injected is adapted from make_figs.m in pymatbridge.
