Free software is more than just an alternative to proprietary software; it is a philosophy that champions user freedom and knowledge sharing. As Richard Stallman said:
"Free software is a matter of freedom, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of 'free speech,' not 'free beer'."
I strongly believe in the GNU Project, as it promotes digital autonomy and collaboration. Without it, we would be trapped in proprietary systems that restrict our right to understand, modify, and share software. Stallman founded this movement with a clear purpose: to ensure that everyone has control over the technology they use.
Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, supports this vision with a pragmatic approach:
"Software is like sex: it's better when it's free."
His open-source operating system revolutionized computing, proving that open collaboration can produce something superior to what closed corporate environments create.
One of the key advantages of free software is security and reliability. Unlike proprietary systems, where only a single company has control, free software allows anyone to contribute, review, and improve it. This creates a transparent ecosystem where errors are quickly fixed, and solutions are accessible to all.
Stallman also warns us:
"If you don’t have the freedom to run, modify, and share the software you use, then you are being controlled by whoever developed it."
I believe technology should be in the hands of users, not corporations that prioritize profit over ethics.
Free software also has a positive impact on society. It democratizes access to knowledge, ensuring that people, regardless of their financial situation, have powerful tools to learn and create. Torvalds once said:
"Free software only works if you can trust it."
That trust comes from transparency and community involvement.
Another crucial aspect is innovation without restrictions. In the free software world, developers are free to experiment and push boundaries without worrying about corporate limitations or licensing fees. This encourages technological advancement at an unprecedented scale.
Moreover, free software respects user privacy, unlike proprietary alternatives that often include surveillance and hidden tracking. When software is open, you can verify exactly what it does and ensure that it works in your best interest.
That is why I fully support GNU/Linux and all projects that promote digital freedom. The future of technology must be based on collaboration, ethics, and user independence.
After all, as Stallman states:
"Freedom is power: the power to cooperate with others, the power to control your own life."
And that is exactly what free software offers us.
The GNU Project is the foundation of the free software movement. It was launched in 1983 by Richard Stallman, with the goal of creating a completely free operating system that respects user freedoms. This led to the development of the GNU system, which, when combined with the Linux kernel, forms what we now call GNU/Linux.
Stallman saw that proprietary software was restricting users, denying them control over their own computers. To counter this, he created the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in 1985, ensuring that software would be free as in freedom, not just free of cost.
At the heart of the GNU Project are the Four Freedoms, which define what it means for software to be truly free:
- Freedom 0 – The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
- Freedom 1 – The freedom to study how the program works and change it to do what you want. (Access to the source code is a must.)
- Freedom 2 – The freedom to redistribute copies to help others.
- Freedom 3 – The freedom to distribute modified versions so the community can benefit.
These freedoms empower users, ensuring they have control over their software rather than being controlled by it.
The GNU system laid the groundwork for the open-source revolution. Many core components of modern computing, such as GCC (GNU Compiler Collection), GNU Bash, and GNU Emacs, were developed as part of this project.
Stallman famously said:
"The only way to make computers truly serve their users is to make sure that software obeys their freedom."
Without GNU, we would be locked into proprietary ecosystems where companies dictate what we can and cannot do.
The GNU Project continues to be a symbol of digital freedom. By supporting and using free software, we protect our rights and promote a world where knowledge is open and accessible to all.
As Stallman says:
"Think of free software as a way of life, not just as a tool."
By embracing the GNU philosophy, we ensure that technology remains a force for freedom, collaboration, and innovation.

In 1991, a young Finnish student named Linus Torvalds started working on a new operating system kernel as a personal project. He wanted to create a free and open alternative to MINIX, a small Unix-like system used for education.
Torvalds initially described his project in an online forum, stating:
"I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like GNU) for 386(486) AT clones."
This small project quickly gained interest from developers around the world. It was released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), allowing anyone to use, modify, and distribute it freely.
Although Linux started as just a kernel, it became the foundation of a full operating system when combined with GNU tools. This combination, known as GNU/Linux, provided a complete, free alternative to proprietary systems like Windows and Unix.

For years, BSD was tied to AT&T's proprietary Unix code, but in 1991, the Berkeley team released BSD Net/2, a nearly free version of the system. This led to 386BSD, and later, the development of fully free BSD systems like:
- FreeBSD – Focused on performance and security
- OpenBSD – Known for its emphasis on security and code correctness
- NetBSD – Designed for portability across different architectures
While Linux gained widespread adoption due to the GNU General Public License (GPL), BSD systems followed a more permissive BSD License, allowing developers to use the code with fewer restrictions. Companies like Apple (macOS), Sony (PlayStation), and Netflix have used BSD-based technologies in their products.
BSD played a major role in the development of the internet, with many early web servers and networking tools built on BSD foundations. The project's contributions to free software continue to be relevant and influential, proving that freedom in computing comes in many forms.
