@deansheather, can you look into this?

Also, @EdwardAngert, did you face any of these in your testing on Windows? We can address this by adding a well tested troubleshooting section in docs.

oh whoa - thanks @matifali ! I think this was exactly the error I encountered, but I think I blamed my VM, so I switched to the actual Windows box

I don't have my Windows machine set up right now + I need to finish something up, so I'm going to leave some notes here that I can come back to/might be useful to anyone else who finds the broken Windows App SDK 1.6.5 installer link.

that link is broken, like @fatim4h says (thanks for highlighting the issue!).

MS site has a broken link to https://aka.ms/windowsappsdk/1.6/latest/windowsappruntimeinstall-x64.exe which redirects to a bing search

but if you

  1. take that link and use the format they use on 1.7: https://aka.ms/windowsappsdk/1.7/1.7.250310001/windowsappruntimeinstall-x64.exe

  2. find the latest 1.6 release on GitHub (1.6.6 today): https://github.com/microsoft/WindowsAppSDK/releases/tag/v1.6.6

  3. which links to: https://www.nuget.org/packages/Microsoft.WindowsAppSDK/1.6.250228001

  4. then we extract the 1.6.250228001 from the release and get: https://aka.ms/windowsappsdk/1.6/1.6.250228001/windowsappruntimeinstall-x64.exe

    which downloads!

😰

edit to add: looks like someone submitted an issue to their docs: MicrosoftDocs/windows-dev-docs#5359
