Unable to use act with podman on macos (with M chip)

Here are the steps I took:

• Initialized a machine: podman machine init
• (Optional, i.e. I tried with or without this step and either way the fail was the same) Ran podman machine set --rootful
• Started a machine podman machine start

Next, I tried to run DOCKER_HOST="unix://"$(podman machine inspect --format '{{.ConnectionInfo.PodmanSocket.Path}}') act which keeps yielding the following error:

What am I doing wrong?

idk what you did, but just installing podman-desktop for mac from a clean system with almost all defaults just worked for me late 2024.

• No DOCKER_HOST env needed, nothing because /var/run/docker.sock has been installed for me.
• No podman machine set --rootful
• No podman machine init
• The Installer handled everything
• podman machine start # This command is optional, but functional for podman-desktop

The hard way requires providing act the unavailable information it couldn't guess.

--container-daemon-socket /path/to/podman.sock/inside/podman-machine

Idk what /path/to/podman.sock/inside/podman-machine is for you.

Thanks.... It didn't work, but I noticed some info echoed when running podman machine start:

The system helper service is not installed; the default Docker API socket
address can't be used by podman. If you would like to install it, run the following commands:

        sudo /opt/homebrew/Cellar/podman/5.4.1/bin/podman-mac-helper install
        podman machine stop; podman machine start

I ran the recommendation and now it works.
