Funding GraphiQL #1067

Description

@benjie

GraphiQL is currently maintained by a number of volunteers. We've big plans for enabling an incredibly powerful ecosystem of GraphiQL IDEs, enabling projects such as Altair, Playground, Apollo, Gatsby, OneGraph and many more to bring new innovations to the GraphQL experience without having to re-invent the wheel. (These plans have been discussed at the GraphiQL working groups and are visible in our GitHub projects.)

However, the maintainer team do not have enough time available to push this forward at the speed we'd like to. We've had long waits before releases recently waiting for maintainers to be available to perform code reviews. We've also not had a working group meeting for a little while due to lack of availability of the maintainers to organise it.

Whilst extending the maintainer team has helped relieve the maintenance burden a little, this project doesn't only require maintenance - it requires actively pushing forward.

As GraphiQL is now managed under the GraphQL Foundation, I've spoken to the GraphQL Foundation/Linux Foundation representatives about this, and @caniszczyk has proposed that interested parties can support GraphiQL development via the Linux Foundation's crowd funding platform, at: https://funding.communitybridge.org/projects/graphql

This would enable transparency into how the funds are being distributed, and will help our maintainers to take time off from work to spend more time pushing the GraphiQL project forward (not to mention catching up with the significant numbers of issues and pull requests we receive).

If you or your company benefit from GraphiQL and would like to see it advance, please sponsor ongoing development at the above link. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out either in this issue, or to myself, @acao or the GraphQL Foundation directly.
