How to convert code to a HEX file that can be imported into MakeCode without using the MakeCode website?

Hello,

I would like to understand how MakeCode converts block-based or Python code into a HEX file on the MakeCode website. On the MakeCode site, I can directly write code and download the corresponding HEX file, but I would like to know if it is possible to convert code into a HEX file without using the MakeCode website and still be able to import the file into MakeCode for further editing.

Are there any available tools or APIs for this process in MakeCode? Or is there a way to achieve this goal?

@SGneil can you give a little more info about what your use case is? why do you need to generate hex files that can be imported into makecode?

I'm trying to use ChatGPT to generate Micro:bit Python code, hoping to apply it in elementary school education. Therefore, I would like to convert the code into MakeCode block-based programs.

@SGneil ah i see! you can use the makecode cli for this. it can generate hex files and also create share links that you can import; however, iirc there is no way to invoke the decompiler from the command line so you'll have to convert to blocks after importing into makecode
