Currently ther is no way to figure out if the warning is for the host or for a container or some other virtualized system crated by NixOS.

Things done

  • Built on platform(s)
    • x86_64-linux
    • aarch64-linux
    • x86_64-darwin
    • aarch64-darwin
  • For non-Linux: Is sandboxing enabled in nix.conf? (See Nix manual)
    • sandbox = relaxed
    • sandbox = true
  • Tested, as applicable:
  • Tested compilation of all packages that depend on this change using nix-shell -p nixpkgs-review --run "nixpkgs-review rev HEAD". Note: all changes have to be committed, also see nixpkgs-review usage
  • Tested basic functionality of all binary files (usually in ./result/bin/)
  • 25.05 Release Notes (or backporting 24.11 and 25.05 Release notes)
    • (Package updates) Added a release notes entry if the change is major or breaking
    • (Module updates) Added a release notes entry if the change is significant
    • (Module addition) Added a release notes entry if adding a new NixOS module
  • Fits CONTRIBUTING.md.

I have tested this on my own setup and it works:

evaluation warning: system.stateVersion is not set for config 'lilim', defaulting to 24.11. Read why this matters on https://nixos.org/manual/nixos/stable/options.html#opt-system.stateVersion.

I wonder if there's anything else we could print to more clearly indicate which config caused this.

seems like a sensible change.

As discussed in the linked discourse thread, adding hostname in a one-off way to warnings/errors (as this PR does) doesn't substantively improve the debugging situation. It'd have to be added to every single warning/error in that case.

Module system debugging is awful but this doesn't seem to be a sustainable solution.
