What happened?

Description:
When using Single Toolbar mode, pinned extensions occasionally display with full labels instead of their correct icon-only state after changing Sidebar Width settings.

Steps to Reproduce:

  • Enable 'Settings > Browser Layout > Single Toolbar'
  • Have some extensions pinned
  • Change the Sidebar Width setting (default hotkey CTRL+B)

Current Behavior:

  • Extensions incorrectly expand to show full labels and tooltips
  • Takes up more toolbar space than intended
  • Image

Expected Behavior:

  • Extensions should display as icons only
  • No labels should be visible
  • Image

Temporary Workaround:

  1. Right-click the side or top bar
  2. Select 'Customize Toolbar'
  3. Exit the customization mode

Environment:

  • Browser: Zen, 1.7.1b
  • Extensions Affected: All pinned extensions in the toolbar
  • Layout Mode: Single toolbar
  • Setting: Sidebar Width adjustment
  • No Mods or CustomCSS

Additional Notes:

  • Issue only occurs with Single Toolbar enabled
  • Problem persists until the workaround is applied, and comes back when changing again

Please lmk if you need anything else.

Reproducible?

  • I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.

Another way to recreate this is to simply switch between "Single Toolbar" and "Multiple Toolbars" under "Settings > Browser Layout". This is definitely a super common occurrence when browsing the settings and can lead to a bad first user impression!

Also realised that simply unpinning one of the extensions, makes all the other pinned extensions return to normal.

Hi, @Reuzehagel. I'm Dosu, and I'm helping the desktop team manage their backlog. I'm marking this issue as stale.

Issue Summary:

  • You reported a display issue in Zen browser version 1.7.1b on Windows.
  • Pinned extensions show full labels instead of icons in Single Toolbar mode after adjusting the Sidebar Width.
  • Temporary fixes include toggling 'Customize Toolbar' mode or unpinning one extension.
  • TheTrueWhiteOwl noted that switching between "Single Toolbar" and "Multiple Toolbars" can recreate the issue.
  • This issue does not occur in Mozilla Firefox.

Next Steps:

  • Please confirm if this issue is still relevant to the latest version of the Zen browser.
  • If there is no further activity, the issue will be automatically closed in 7 days.

Thank you for your understanding and contribution!

@dosubot This is still an issue in the latest version 1.10.1b. Please reopen.

There have however been some changes on how this bug behaves, namely:
Not all pinned add-ons get expanded (I have two pinned and now only the second one gets expanded).
Switching between "Single Toolbar" and "Multiple Toolbars" a second time fixes the issue on its own again (guess this is a new workaround for this issue).
