What happened?

Steps to reproduce

  • Press ctrl+t to open a new tab
  • Type in a URL
  • Press alt+enter

Expected result: URL opened in new tab
Observed: URL opened in existing tab

Commentary

Firefox trained me to open tabs in 2 ways:

  • by pressing ctrl+t
  • by pressing ctrl+L to go to the location bar, then pressing alt+enter after typing in a URL

The problem with the recent UI change in Zen Browser getting rid of the new tab page is that both these ways look the same. Due to that visual confusion, I forget that I pressed ctrl+t and end up combining ctrl+t with alt+enter.

Reproducible?

  • I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.

Version

1.7.5b

What platform are you seeing the problem on?

Linux (Tarball)

Disabling alt+enter after ctrl+t would also fix this issue.

Hi, @akkartik. I'm Dosu, and I'm helping the desktop team manage their backlog. I'm marking this issue as stale.

Issue Summary:

  • Problem in Zen Browser version 1.7.5b on Linux.
  • alt+enter after ctrl+t opens URL in the existing tab, not a new one.
  • Inconsistent behavior compared to Firefox.
  • Suggested resolution: Disable alt+enter after ctrl+t.

Next Steps:

  • Is this issue still relevant to the latest version of the desktop repository? If so, please comment to keep the discussion open.
  • Otherwise, this issue will be automatically closed in 7 days.

Thank you for your understanding and contribution!

@dosubot not stale

@mauro-balades I think there's a mistake here with automation interfering with the issue's progress. This issue is still relevant as of version 1.10.1b. The problem here is that Ctrl + T is not opening the website in a new tab and this behavior varies by platform.

In Linux, instead of opening the website in a new tab, it will switch to the existing tab when you specifically select one of the open tabs and hold a modifier key and press enter (Ctrl + Enter, Alt + Enter or Shift + Enter). This behavior is demonstrated below:

Zen-NewTab-Bug.mp4

If you follow the exact same steps as above in Windows, it will behave differently by opening the website in the existing tab rather than in a new one.

Similarly, if you enter a new URL in the address bar via Ctrl + T and use the Alt + Enter shortcut, it will open the new URL in the existing tab, instead of a new one. This behavior is consistent across across Linux/Windows platform and relates directly to this issue.

It was quite frustrating when I encountered this bug organically.
