New tab inconsistent behavior when using 'new tab' button.

What happened?

Happens when using the new tab button in combination with the new update, where the new tab page is removed.
Clicking new tab then clicking a pinned/favorite page opens in a new tab. However when typing and then clicking or pressing enter it opens in the same tab.

Expected behavior:
Clicking new tab > typing/clicking both results in opening the page a new tab when the search bar is being opened via the 'new tab' button.

Actual behavior:
Only works when clicking pinned pages. Or when using alt+enter

Reproducible?

• I have checked that this issue cannot be reproduced on Mozilla Firefox.
