Documentation states that lintFilePatterns is a mandatory property but the “move-options-to-target-defaults” migration in 17.2.9 removes it from project.json files.

Additionally both https://nx.dev/nx-api/eslint-plugin/documents/dependency-checks#dependency-checks-rule and https://nx.dev/recipes/running-tasks/reduce-repetitive-configuration#reduce-repetitive-configuration make reference to making updates to lintFilePatterns configuration.
