Asynchronous Content and Crawlers in SPA

In the current Vue.js documentation, it states that Google crawlers do not wait for asynchronous content when fetching data via Ajax. Is this really the case? According to Vercel's research, it seems that the content might eventually be indexed, even though there could be some delay.
