Elm UI workshop

This repo contains the example app that we’ll build during the workshop. It looks like this:

All code is for reference purposes only. Use it if you get stuck during the workshop, but otherwise I encourage you to start with a fresh app!

Instructions

Download and Install Elm (if you haven’t already).
Download and Install Visual Studio Code
Install the Elm plugin for Visual Studio Code (be careful not to download the other, deprecated plugin)
(Optional) In Visual Studio Code, press Cmd+Shift+P (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux) and search for "Install 'code' command in PATH"
(Optional) Install elm-format (requires NPM) for auto-formatting on save

Just Elm

Create a new directory, e.g. mkdir elm-workshop; cd elm-workshop
Initialize a new Elm project: elm init
Open the directory in Visual Studio Code: code .
Start the Elm Reactor: elm reactor
Create src/Main.elm and paste the following starter program, then go to http://localhost:8000/src/Main.elm to check if everything works.

With Rails

rails new --webpacker=elm

# Check that it’s installed by running:
bin/rails s

# ... and visiting http://localhost:3000

Edit routes.rb:

Rails.application.routes.draw do
  root to: 'application#show'
end

Create a template:

mkdir -p app/views/application
echo "<%= javascript_pack_tag 'hello_elm' %>" > app/views/application/show.html.erb

Run Rails server and webpack dev server:

bin/rails s
bin/webpack-dev-server

Install elm-ui:

elm install mdgriffith/elm-ui
