I'm having this issue as well, tried using a venv and installing from latest source as described in the readme. System python packages are up to date. My error message also states broken pipe and an issue with curl.

I downgraded to 2.0.1, and this error went away. Unfortunately I need the search functionality implemented in the git master, but this leads me to suspect that this is a bug introduced sometime recently

Yes, this is another issue introduced by the curl_cffi switch. Still investigating what I'm going to do here

By the way for others having this issue, until something happens regarding curl_cffi, I've been able to mitigate this issue by using commit hash 20ae80b398ec83fa272f0a96812140e14868c88f which is from before the curl_cffi switch. Obviously not ideal because there have been changes since then, but restarting a docker container hourly was proving more annoying.

this still causes freezes for me so it's not really a curl_cffi issue i assume

From my local testing, the new pre-release version of curl_cffi resolves this issue. Please install it from the releases page and test. Make sure you install it in the correct venv!
