Maximum shift registers

Hi all,
anybody who worked with shift registers can tell about the maximum daisy-chained used?
The specifications for buttons and leds is: "Maximum amount of registers in this setup isn't specified, but reasonable number shall be used."
Of course, it is not the same in atmega or rbpico, but any info is welcomed.
