Why this change? Can JDBC escapes contain double quotes?

I would write this as:

					if (escaped) {
						token.append(ch);
					} 
					else {
						if (!doubleQuoted) {
							singleQuoted = !singleQuoted;
						}
						result.append(ch);
					}
