Search function is very slow after recent update

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes

• VS Code Version: 1.101.1 (Universal)
• OS Version: Mac OS Sonoma 14.7.6

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Search a term in a large repository
2. Change term
3. Search will hang on a prefix of what you typed in or the old term.
   rg works fine so it's not related to the search itself. Issue popped up after most recent update.

Mitigated this issue by reverting to the April release.

Same here on Windows 10.

The search window is extremely slow. When inputting a search term it will start searching after the first couple of letters. But it will keep searching for the prefix instead of canceling the search and searching for the actual, full search terms. It seems to continue each search until all results have been found, even though the search term has long been changed.

Also the Cancel Search/Refresh button seems broken. Even while a search is in progress, the button will still remain in the Refresh state. It should switch to Cancel Search.

In general, I would consider this switching button an anti-pattern of UX design. If search just finished, clicking the button with the intention of canceling would restart the search. Since there is no progress bar indicating how likely it is that the button will switch its state, I would recommend using two separate buttons.

So I would rephrase it as "live search is broken".

It used to be the fastest and lightest out there, now there's no point even trying to use it.

A workaround that doesn't require rolling back to 1.100 is to increase the search.searchOnTypeDebouncePeriod setting, or to set "search.searchOnType": false

That workaround though not a fix right? The issue is that searches are never cancelled so neither of those solution fix the underlying problem. If I pick search, change my mind, type something else and pick search again I'll still have to wait for the first search to finish even though I'm no longer interested in its results.

Just trying to get acknowledgement this a bug and not "working as intended"

I type 'hasSuffix' then change to 'spawn' then change to 'dawn'. 2mins and 40 seconds later it's finally stopped after showing all kinds of intermediate searches. It's very strange that the first result is spa even though the first thing I typed was hassuffix. We see results for has later as well as 15 seconds of no results from 1:40 to 1:55.

Please will others who have this issue try my repro at #251888 (comment) but with your own codebase and comment here whether it works for you or not.
